Introduction

The Karazhan attunement questline is one of the most iconic progression chains of The Burning Crusade. To gain access to the raid, you must complete several dungeon quests, collect key fragments, and finish the Caverns of Time storyline. This step‑by‑step guide will help you complete every stage quickly and without mistakes.

1. Archmage Alturus - Starting the Attunement

You can begin the Karazhan chain at level 68, although completing it is recommended at level 70. All dungeon steps can be done in normal or heroic mode.

Steps:

1. Travel to Deadwind Pass and head to the southern entrance of Karazhan.
   
2. Speak with Archmage Alturus to pick up:
   • Arcane Disturbances
   • Restless Activity
3. Collect Ghostly Essence from spirits in the Master's Cellar beneath Karazhan.
4. Return to Alturus, turn in the quests, and accept Contact from Dalaran.
5. Go to the Dalaran Crater in Alterac Mountains and speak with Archmage Cedric.
   
6. He will send you to Shattrath with the quest Khadgar.
7. Visit Khadgar in central Shattrath to receive Entry Into Karazhan

2. First Key Fragment - The Shadow Labyrinth

To enter this dungeon, you need the Shadow Labyrinth Key, dropped by the last boss of Sethekk Halls - Talon King Ikiss.

1. Inside the Shadow Labyrinth, locate the Arcane Container near the wall in the room with Murmur.
2. Activating it summons the Guardian of the First Fragment.
3. Defeat him and loot the First Key Fragment.
4. Return to Khadgar to receive the next quest - The Second and Third Fragments.

3. Second & Third Key Fragments

Second Fragment - The Steamvault

1. Enter The Steamvault in Coilfang Reservoir (Zangarmarsh).
2. Near Hydromancer Thespia, find the underwater Arcane Container.
3. Activate it, defeat the Guardian of the Second Fragment, and loot the fragment.

Obtaining the Arcatraz Key

To access The Arcatraz, you must complete the Consortium questline that rewards the Key to the Arcatraz.

This chain begins in Area 52 with Aether-technician Karja.

Quest sequence overview:

1. Assisting the Consortium - speak with Karja.
2. Stealing Arklon’s Artifact - kill Pentatharon.
3. A Heap of Ethereals - collect 10 Zaxxis Insignias.
4. Nexus-Prince Shaffar’s Personal Chamber - slay Nexus-Terror Nesaad.
5. Request for Assistance - travel to Garrosh’s Landing.
6. Rightful Repossession - gather surveying equipment near Manaforge Duro.
7. An Audience with the Prince - head to the Stormspire.
8. Triangulation Point One
9. Triangulation Point Two
10. Full Triangle - defeat Culuthas and obtain the Ata'mal Crystal.
11. Special Delivery to Shattrath City

Finally, A'dal gives the quest How to Break Into the Arcatraz.

• Lower key fragment: dropped by Pathaleon the Calculator (The Mechanar).
• Top Shard of the Arcatraz Key: dropped by Warp Splinter (The Botanica).

Turn in both fragments to A’dal to receive the Key to the Arcatraz

Third Fragment - The Arcatraz

1. Enter The Arcatraz.
2. After defeating the first boss, Zereketh the Unbound, find the Arcane Container in the Voidwalker room.
3. Summon and defeat the Guardian of the Third Fragment.
4. Loot the Third Key Fragment and return to Khadgar to receive The Master's Touch.

4. The Master’s Key - Caverns of Time

All party members must complete this access chain to enter The Black Morass.

Caverns of Time Access

1. In Tanaris, at the entrance to the Caverns of Time, take the quest To the Master's Lair.
2. Inside, speak with Andormu to accept The Caverns of Time.
3. Follow the Keepers of Time NPC through the tour.
4. You now unlock Old Hillsbrad Foothills.

Old Hillsbrad Foothills

1. Speak with Erozion to take Taretha's Diversion.
2. Use Pack of Incendiary Bombs to burn down the barracks.
3. Kill Lieutenant Drake.
4. Travel to Durnholde Keep and meet Thrall.
5. Ensure everyone has completed Taretha’s Diversion before proceeding.
6. Begin the escort quest Escape from Durnholde.
7. After completing the storyline, turn in the quest and get Return to Andormu.

Return to the Caverns of Time - you now gain access to The Black Morass.

The Black Morass

1. Enter the instance and speak with Sa'at.
2. Defeat the waves of infinite dragonflight and assist Medivh in opening the Dark Portal.
3. After completion, speak with Medivh to finish The Master’s Touch.
4. He gives you Return to Khadgar

Turn this in at Shattrath to receive the The Master’s Key, granting access to Karazhan.

You are now attuned for Karazhan!

Speak with Khadgar to pick up the follow-up quest The Violet Eye, and travel to Deadwind Pass to begin your journey into one of the most memorable raids in The Burning Crusade.
